Ahmed Moustafa obtained his B.Sc. in Nuclear Engineering from Alexandria University, Egypt, in 2013. He later joined the same university as a Teaching Assistant, where he tutored several undergraduate basic science and nuclear engineering courses. Ahmed Joined North Carolina State University in the U.S. as a Graduate Research Assistant, where he obtained his Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering with a focus in Radiation Detection in 2022. His thesis work was part of a multi-institution collaboration that was led by Sandia National Laboratories and involved ORNL, and it aimed at developing a single volume neutron scatter camera for application in nuclear security and nonproliferation.
Prior to joining ORNL, Ahmed was a Lead Engineer of Radiation Detection Instrumentation at Kairos Power, CA. He led the development of a burnup measurement system of the spent nuclear fuel of Kairos’ first-of-a-kind fluoride-cooled, high-temperature, pebble-bed reactor. Ahmed was also responsible for the radiation instrumentation of Kairos’ Hermes test reactor being constructed at Oak Ridge, TN.
With ORNL, Ahmed is part of an early-career project to develop a high-rate, high-resolution, SiPM-based thermal neutron Anger Camera for reflectometry instruments at the Spallation Neutron Source.
