This work studies deformation of EV battery module under external mechanical loading and effect of inactive module components on module failure. Contrary to expectation it was revealed that aluminum cooling plates reduce the force of indentation (by a factor of 1.6), due to collapse of cooling channels and plastic deformation in aluminum. At the same time, the internal short circuit in the cells was registered at a consistent displacement of the indenter which indicated that the failure criterion (or cell safety criterion) should be formulated in terms of strain. We selected the first principal strain in separator as a variable for the failure criterion and performed finite element simulations of the battery module structure under spherical indentation. The model was able to predict force-displacement history as well as failure point in a battery module.
