Strong degradation of polycarbonate and polystyrene by the CO2 capture solvent diethyl sebacate
We report on observations of strong degradation of a polycarbonate vessel by a solvent being considered for a CO2 capture process, diethyl sebacate. This degradation led to failure of a polymeric hollow fiber membrane unit. Additional tests showed rapid degradation of polycarbonate safety glasses and polystyrene-based petri dishes by exposure to diethyl sebacate at ambient…

Process Scale-Up of an Energy-Efficient Membrane Solvent Extraction Process for Rare Earth Recycling from Electronic Wastes
This study reports the process scale-up and long-term performance of an energy-efficient and cost-effective membrane solvent extraction (MSX) process for separation and recovery of high purity rare earth oxides (REOs) from scrap permanent magnets (SPMs). The rare earth elements (REEs), including dysprosium, neodymium, and praseodymium, are recovered from SPMs using a neutr…

Fabrication and Characterization of Composite Membranes for the Concentration of Lithium Containing Solutions Using Forward Osmosis
In this study, an energy and highly time efficient, cost effective, and scalable forward osmosis (FO) composite polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane is developed to concentrate lithium chloride recovered from naturally occurring geothermal brine resources. Dense thin robust defect‐free Kynar‐PVDF membranes are fabricated on porous PVDF hollow fiber supports. Various mem…

Quantum Chemical Simulations of CO2 and N2 Capture in Reline, a Prototypical Deep Eutectic Solvent
Deep eutectic solvents such as reline are an emerging class of low-cost, environmentally friendly solvents with tunable properties that are potentially applicable for the capture and separation of CO2. Experimental measurements showed that a reline-based membrane contactor can capture and separate CO2 via physisorption through a dissolution process with 96.7% purity from a…

Selective Recovery of Rare Earth Elements from a Wide Range of E-Waste and Process Scalability of Membrane Solvent Extraction
In this study, the scalability of the supported membrane solvent extraction (MSX) process for the recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from scrap permanent magnets was demonstrated by processing larger quantities of different scrap magnet feedstocks with a membrane area of more than 1 m2. The MSX process was successfully employed to recover high-purity REEs in their oxid…

Application of the macrohomogeneous line model for the characterization of carbon aerogel electrodes in capacitive deionization
Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a conceivable alternative desalination technology. Among the carbon materials studied as the deionizing electrode, carbon aerogels are a promising material due to their high surface area, structural designability and low resistivity. When evaluating carbons for CDI, their electrochemical properties are a crucial variable making the characte…
