Accelerating Structure–Property Relationship Discovery with Multimodal Machine Learning and Self-Driving Microscopy

Microscopy combined with local spectroscopy is widely used to correlate nanoscale structure with functional properties in materials, but conventional measurements rely heavily on human-selected sampling locations and predefined targets, limiting data set diversity and the potential for discovery. Here, we present a framework that integrates autonomous microscopy with dual-…

Non-classical ion-indiffusion processes in quasi-one-dimensional ionic conductor KTiOPO4

Developments in coercive field engineering and waveguide writing via ion-exchange in the ferroelectric ionic-conductor KTiOPO4 (KTP) have led to breakthroughs within the field of nonlinear optics and quantum photonics. However, the microscopic diffusion dynamics of ion-exchange in KTP are poorly understood and show signs of non-classical diffusion dynamics. The precise con…

Scan-Path- and Initial-State-Dependent Superdomain Switching in (111)-Oriented PZT

Polarization switching in ferroelectric materials arises from the collective evolution of complex domain hierarchies, yet deterministic control over these processes remains challenging. Here, we investigate scan-path- and initial-state-dependent switching in epitaxial (111)-oriented PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 thin films using automated AFM-based writing combined with quantitative 3D p…

Autonomous fabrication of tailored defect structures in 2D materials using machine learning-enabled scanning transmission electron microscopy

Materials with desired quantum properties can be engineered from atomic scale assembly techniques, but existing methods often lack the agility and accuracy to precisely and intelligently control the manufacturing process. Here we demonstrate a fully autonomous approach to fabricating atomic-level defects using electron beams in scanning transmission electron microscopy (ST…

Automated Bacterial Identification and Morphological Feature Analysis in Low-Dose Cryo-EM Using YOLOv11

Bacteria rapidly adapt to environmental cues through morphological and ultrastructural changes that correlate with physiology and behavior. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) can capture these phenotypic changes in near-native, vitrified states, but manual analysis of low-dose micrographs is labor intensive and limits throughput. Here, we present an end-…

Synthetic data-driven deep learning for label-free autonomous atomic force microscopy

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is a widely used tool for nanoscale characterization across materials science, energy research, and biology. However, its adoption in high-throughput materials discovery and statistically driven studies remains limited by a strong dependence on expert operator input and by the scarcity of annotated experimental AFM datasets needed to enable da…

Automated Construction of Artificial Lattice Structures with Designer Electronic States

Manipulating matter with a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) enables the creation of atomically defined artificial structures that host designer quantum states. However, the time-consuming nature of the manipulation process, coupled with the sensitivity of the STM tip, constrains the exploration of diverse configurations and limits the size of the designed features. In t…

Designing Antifouling and Antimicrobial Interfaces: Structural Characterization using CryoEM, Automated Microscopy, and AI Image Segmentation

The design of functionalized surfaces for interactions with biological systems is critical across sectors such as healthcare, energy, and agriculture. Tailoring materials for specific applications, such as antifouling and antimicrobial surfaces, demands a comprehensive understanding of topology and chemistry across multiple length and time scales on both biological and mat…

Beyond Optimization: Exploring Novelty Discovery in Autonomous Experiments

Autonomous experiments (AEs) are transforming how scientific research is conducted by integrating artificial intelligence with automated experimental platforms. Current AEs primarily focus on the optimization of a predefined target; while accelerating this goal, such an approach limits the discovery of unexpected or unknown physical phenomena. Here, we introduce a novel fr…

Ferroelastic Domain-Induced Electronic Modulation in Halide Perovskites

Lead halide perovskites have emerged as promising materials for optoelectronic applications due to their exceptional properties. In the all-inorganic CsPbBr3 perovskites, ferroelastic domains formed during phase transitions enhance bulk transport and emissive efficiency. However, the microscopic mechanisms governing carrier dynamics remain poorly understood. In this study,…

Curiosity driven exploration to optimize structure–property learning in microscopy

Rapidly determining structure–property correlations in materials is an important challenge in better understanding fundamental mechanisms and greatly assists in materials design. In microscopy, imaging data provides a direct measurement of the local structure, while spectroscopic measurements provide relevant functional property information. Deep kernel active learning app…
