Whole-scene, one-sided backscatter x-ray imaging with coded apertures
X-ray radiography can be an important diagnostic for emergency response, providing timely diagnostic information about a suspect object. However, there are situations where similar information would be better obtained with a one-sided imaging technique. X-ray backscatter imaging is a proven technology that could provide such information, but current implementations have dr…

Progress Toward Gamma-Ray Imaging for Automated Holdup Measurement in Gloveboxes
Shielded gloveboxes are currently being constructed to facilitate dilution and disposal of many tons of excess plutonium oxide. Measuring holdup in these gloveboxes is expected to be challenging because of the limited available lines of sight through the glovebox shielding. A system of gamma-ray imagers is being developed to provide localization and quantification for hold…

Beta-Decay Half-Lives beyond 54Ca: A Systematic Survey of Decay Properties Approaching the Neutron Dripline
In an experiment performed at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) using the FRIB Decay Station initiator, 15 new half-lives of isotopes near 54Ca were measured. A new method of extracting lifetimes from experimental data, taking into account the unknown 𝛽-delayed neutron emission branches of very neutron-rich nuclei, was developed to enable systematic uncertainty an…

Universal Effective Charges in the 𝑠𝑑 and 𝑓𝑝 Shells
The 247-keV state in 54Sc, populated in the 𝛽 decay of 54Ca, is reported here as a nanosecond isomer with a half-life of 26.0(22) ns. The state is interpreted as the 1+ member of the 𝜋𝑓7/2⊗𝜈𝑓5/2 spin-coupled multiplet, which decays to the 3+,𝜋𝑓7/2⊗𝜈𝑝1/2 ground state. The new half-life corresponds to a pure 𝐸2 transition with a strength of 1.93(16) W.u., providing the…

First 𝛽-delayed neutron spectroscopy of 24O
The 𝛽 decay of 24O was investigated at NSCL/MSU using a combination of neutron and 𝛾-ray spectroscopy. For the first time, the 𝛽-delayed neutron energy spectrum of 24O was measured, revealing three intensely populated, isolated neutron-unbound states in 24F. This allowed for the extraction of the decay strength in 24F up to 6.2 MeV. A comprehensive comparison of the experi…
