A concern in the deployment of large wind turbines on ocean floating platforms is the effect of floating-platform motions on their electrical power generation. Further, it is not clear how floating motions influence waking, which might affect the combined power generation of collections of turbines. We examine the average power output of a single and a collection of NREL 5…

Machine learning (ML) techniques have emerged as promising approaches to improve regional weather forecast accuracy and reliability through data-driven methods. We propose a novel ML-based weather forecasting model, the Multiperiod Embed Net (MPENet). A key distinguishing feature of MPENet is its explicit utilization of the inherent cyclic nature in weather dynamics, unlik…

A Bayesian data assimilation scheme is formulated for advection-dominated advective and diffusive evolutionary problems, based upon the Dynamic Likelihood (DLF) approach to filtering. The DLF was developed specifically for hyperbolic problems –waves–, and in this paper, it is extended via a split step formulation, to handle advection-diffusion problems. In the dynamic like…

In this paper, we revisit the problem of decomposing a signal into a tendency and a residual. The tendency describes an executive summary of a signal that encapsulates its notable characteristics while disregarding seemingly random, less interesting aspects. Building upon the Intrinsic Time Decomposition (ITD) and information-theoretical analysis, we introduce two alternat…

We describe and compare outcomes of various Multi-Level Monte Carlo (MLMC) method variants, motivated by the potential of improved computational efficiency over rejection based Monte Carlo, which scales poorly with problem dimension. With an eye toward its application to computational chemical physics, we test MLMC's ability to sample trajectories on two problems — a famil…

This paper introduces an approach to quantifying ecological resilience in biological systems, particularly focusing on noisy systems responding to episodic disturbances with sudden adaptations. Incorporating concepts from nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, we propose a measure termed “ecological resilience through adaptation,” specifically tailored to noisy, forced syst…

Climate variability and weather phenomena can cause extremes and pose significant risk to society and ecosystems, making continued advances in our physical understanding of such events of utmost importance for regional and global security. Advances in machine learning (ML) have been leveraged for applications in climate variability and weather, empowering scientists to app…

We propose improvements to the Dynamic Likelihood Filter (DLF), a Bayesian data assimilation filtering approach, specifically tailored to wave problems. The DLF approach was developed to address the common challenge in the application of data assimilation to hyperbolic problems in the geosciences and in engineering, where observation systems are sparse in space and time. W…

We explore a homotopy sampling procedure and its generalization, loosely based on importance sampling, known as annealed importance sampling. The procedure makes use of a known probability distribution to find, via homotopy, the unknown normalization of a target distribution, as well as samples of the target distribution. We propose a reformulation of the method that leads…

Experimental evidence lends support to the conjecture that cell-to-cell communication plays a role in the gradient sensing of chemical species by certain chains of cells. Models have been formulated to explore this idea. For cells with no identifiable sensing structure, Mugler et al. [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. (U.S.A.) 113, E689 (2016)] have defined a particular local excitat…

We make a physical–mathematical analysis of the implications that the presence of a large number of tiny bubbles may have, when present, on the thin upper layer of the sea. In our oceanographic example, the bubbles are due to intense rain. It was found that the bubbles increase momentum dissipation in the near surface and affect the surface tension force. For short waves,…
