Actinide oxalate precipitation has been ubiquitous in nuclear processing since the 1950s due to its simplicity at laboratory and production scales as both a means of actinide purification and as a key intermediate solid phase towards oxide production. Historical processing information has emphasized the need to reduce actinides, including neptunium (Np), to the tetravalent…

A fundamental understanding of radium (Ra) coordination chemistry has been hindered by the scarcity and radiological hazards of 226Ra, leaving the structural characterization of molecular Ra complexes almost entirely unexplored. Here, we introduce a polyoxometalate (POM)-assisted crystallization strategy that enables single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of Ra–chelator…

The production of plutonium-238 through irradiation of neptunium-237 (237Np) target materials for the use in radioisotope thermoelectric generators is paramount for continued deep space exploration. This work employs scanning electron microscopy to analyze 237Np materials coupled with a well-developed image analysis framework (Morphological Analysis for Material Attributio…

Neptunium (Np) possesses a rich and unique chemistry that often diverges from other actinide elements yet remains relatively underexplored compared with the other light actinides. A resurgence of interest in Np has been spurred by the application of 237Np for plutonium-238 (238Pu) production for use in radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs), necessitating evaluation…

Curium and promethium share similar chemical and physical properties thereby complicating their separation. Co-located processing at Oak Ridge National Laboratory results in curium contamination of the fission product stream containing promethium. To gain insight into the difficulty of this separation, the fundamental properties of these elements are experimentally and com…

Production of neptunium-237 (237Np) target materials for plutonium-238 (238Pu) radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) for deep space exploration requires advanced chemistry and engineering development. Currently, the domestic Pu-238 Supply Program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory produces neptunium dioxide (NpO2) for target material using a modified direct denitrati…
