Considerable attention has recently focused on the vast energy and water demands of supercomputing, namely large-scale data centers that underpin artificial intelligence (AI), one of the great disruptors of contemporary society. Looking ahead some years from now, quantum computing is poised to disrupt established computing paradigms once again. Scientists and engineers are…

US industrial sector water management traditionally overlooks high-value treated water reuse opportunities. To reshape the narrative around industrial water reuse, water-related process boundaries should be expanded to include all water sources and sinks and focus on opportunities for on-site circularity.

Key Takeaways Lowering per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) levels in the long term requires more than end-of-pipe treatment and expensive infrastructure upgrades. A continuous-improvement framework can serve as a guide for active communication and engagement with upstream industrial dischargers. Measurement and monitoring, source reduction, management, and workforce…

The aging water distribution system in the United States, constructed mainly during the 1970s with some pipes dating back 125 years, is experiencing significant deterioration leading to substantial water losses. Along with the potential for water loss savings, improvements in the distribution system by using leak detection technologies can create net energy and cost saving…
