Abstract
An induction cooktop heats the cooking vessel directly by inducing currents within it. Additional advantages include precise temperature control and faster cooking. However, metals such as aluminum, because of their high electrical conductivity and lack of magnetic permeability, are typically incompatible with most commercially available induction cooktops. This work proposes a metal-compatible induction cooktop that employs an input tap-changing, impedance-matching transformer connected to the output of a variable-frequency full-bridge converter. The transformer tap position is selected based on the type of cookware being used. In addition, the proposed system uses double-D (DD) coils, which provide a more uniform magnetic field distribution across the cooktop surface, resulting in more uniform heating for cookware of various sizes. Simulation and experimental results are presented for cooktop performance using both circular coils and DD coils.
