Daanish S. Tyrewala

Postdoctoral Research Associate

Dr. Daanish Tyrewala is a researcher in the Energy Sciences Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Dr. Tyrewala received his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University located in Houghton, MI. He received an M.S. degree and Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering with a Ph.D. minor in Energy Analysis and Policy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Tyrewala’s expertise lies in exploring the use of low lifecycle-carbon fuels such as methane, hydrogen, and ammonia for advanced dual-fuel combustion through experimental and chemical kinetic methods. He envisions a future where diverse solutions drive decarbonization in the global transportation sector. His experience includes working with Tesla’s Battery Abuse Research and Development team, where he focused on developing thermal runaway detection and mitigation strategies. He is also actively engaged in battery electrochemistry research at ORNL focused on silicon-anode lithium-ion batteries, investigating calendar aging mechanisms and the impact of electrolyte composition on cell performance and degradation. His work leverages advanced characterization and diagnostic techniques, including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and complementary electrochemical analyses to better understand interfacial phenomena and aging processes.

With interests spanning both advanced internal combustion engines powered by low-lifecycle carbon fuels and next-generation battery technologies, he is dedicated to advancing sustainable transportation solutions.
