Gilles Buchs

Senior Research Scientist

Gilles Buchs is an experimental physicist and research leader whose career spans academia, industry, and national-laboratory research in quantum nanoscience, photonic systems, quantum sensing, and quantum information science. His work is characterized by a strong interest in translating fundamental quantum science into experimentally grounded technologies and computational capabilities.

He earned a master’s degree in experimental condensed matter physics from ETH Zurich in 2004 and a doctorate in the same field from the University of Basel in 2008. As a Marie Curie Intra-European Postdoctoral Fellow at the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience at Delft University of Technology, he conducted research in quantum nanoelectronics and nanophotonics. In 2013, he joined CSEM in Switzerland as a senior R&D engineer, where he conducted experimental research and developed and managed large collaborative public-private projects in photonic systems and quantum sensing.

In 2018, Gilles joined Silicon Quantum Computing, a company based at the University of New South Wales in Australia, as a Senior Researcher. There, he contributed to the development of an analog quantum processor based on precisely positioned dopants in silicon, with the primary goal of simulating quantum many-body systems.

Gilles joined Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 2021 as a senior research scientist. His initial work focused on contributing to the development of ion-trapping capabilities at ORNL and on establishing and leveraging a quantum edge node to support research in quantum simulation, quantum computing, and quantum sensing. From 2022 to 2023, he served as acting group leader of the Quantum Computing and Sensing Group.

His current research focuses on developing rigorous methods to validate quantum simulations of quantum materials through quantitative comparisons with experimental measurements and classical computational approaches. He leads the Application Certification project within the Quantum Science Center (QSC), which brings together quantum computing, condensed matter physics, neutron-scattering science, uncertainty quantification, and scientific workflow development, with the broader goal of establishing credible pathways toward scientifically meaningful quantum advantage.

Since 2024, Gilles has served as a co-director of ORNL’s Heterogeneous Quantum Systems Laboratory Directed Research and Development Initiative, where he leads multidisciplinary research spanning heterogeneous quantum platforms, enabling technologies, and scientific applications.
