Dr. Ingrid Busch has over 30 years of experience in developing routing and scheduling systems. Her research interests are in Defense Transportation, Modeling and Simulation, Network Analysis and Systems Analysis.
Dr. Busch is the lead developer of the Navigation Investment Model (NIM) development effort for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Planning Center of Expertise for Inland Navigation. NIM allows planners to analyze proposed improvements to the navigation infrastructure on the inland navigation system. Development of this model began in 1996 and continues to evolve as the analyses required to evaluate the aging infrastructure along the waterways become more complex. Dr. Busch has been part of the development effort for NIM since the project began, and has knowledge of the processes involved and the data needed in developing investment plans and analyzing their benefits. She is currently the project manager for the development effort for NIM.
Dr. Busch developed the Biofuel Infrastructure, Logistics, and Transportation (BILT) tool, used to determine the optimal locations for siting processing facilities for the transformation of biomass into fuels. This model is being used in the DOE’s Bioenergy Technology Office (BETO)-funded Best Use of Biomass, Roads to Removal projects, and the Rail Feasibility initiative.
Additionally, Dr. Busch has worked on a wide range of transportation modeling projects, from developing the algorithms used by the U.S. Army Force’s Air Mobility Command (AMC) to schedule the DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM operations, to developing discrete (and discreet) optimization techniques used by the Transportation Security Administration to determine the cargo screening equipment needed to screen cargo transported on passenger aircraft as belly freight, to developing the software used by DOE’s Office of Integrated Waste Management to analyze options for moving used fuel from reactor sites to storage locations.
