Mark D. Lumsden

Mark Lumsden received his PhD from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario Canada in 1999 and joined Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) as a Eugene P. Wigner Fellowship (1999-2001). In 2001 he joined the neutron scattering group at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) where he was an instrument scientist on the HB-3 triple-axis spectrometer until 2011. He then served as the Group Leader for the Time-of-Flight Spectroscopy Group from 2011 until 2017, managing four world leading spectrometers at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), CNCS, HYSPEC, SEQUOIA, and ARCS. In 2017, he became the Group Leader for the Spectroscopy Group in the Neutron Scattering Division at ORNL. In 2020, he became the Section Head for the Spectroscopy Section of the Neutron Scattering Division. This section operates 10 neutron spectrometers at HFIR and SNS. Mark’s research concentrates on using neutron scattering to study quantum materials.
