At its Browns Ferry nuclear power plant, the Tennessee Valley Authority is loading four new 3D-printed fuel assembly brackets manufactured by Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Framatome. The brackets are the first of their kind loaded into a commercial reactor and demonstrate the latest innovations in additive manufacturing and artificial intelligence. The project is part of the lab’s Transformational Challenge Reactor program, which is introducing new manufacturing techniques and approaches to industry partners in order to speed up the deployment of nuclear systems.

A new method to produce large, monolayer single-crystal-like graphene films more than a foot long relies on harnessing a “survival of the fittest” competition among crystals. The novel technique, developed by a team led by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, may open new opportunities for growing the high-quality two-dimensional materials necessary for long-awaited practical applications.
