The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) Drift Tube Linac (DTL) employs iris couplers to efficiently deliver RF power into the accelerating structure. To support the development, tuning, and high‑power conditioning of these couplers prior to installation in the actual DTLs, a dedicated test cavity and an iris‑to‑coaxial transition structure have been designed. This work present…

    Conference Paper

The RF Test Facility (RFTF) at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) is used for the conditioning of RF compo-nents such as ceramic vacuum windows and power cou-plers prior to their installation in the H- ion linear accel-erator. This process exposes components to high-power RF fields and thermal cycling to improve performance and remove surface impurities. To automate and o…

    Conference Paper

Efficient and reliable RF power couplers in accelerating cavities require precise impedance matching and mechanical stability to ensure optimal beam energy transfer. In radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) accelerators, power is commonly delivered using waveguide iris or coaxial loop couplers. Iris couplers can handle high RF power but lack tunability, while coaxial loop coupl…

    Conference Paper

Klystron amplifiers have been operated at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) in support of the user program since 2006. SNS tubes have amassed over 100,000 hours of high-voltage and filament-on time providing a significant source of operational statistics for high power, high-duty klystrons. Additionally, the SNS Radiofrequency (RF) Systems Group has developed operational…

    Conference Paper

An ongoing study at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) seeks to better understand and address potential multipacting issues associated with the Drift Tube Linac (DTL) RF vacuum windows. An analysis of several failed operational windows showed indications of excessive RF heating on the TiN-coated alumina ceramics. Coupled with vacuum bursts and arcing during conditioning a…

    Conference Paper

The Proton Power Upgrade (PPU) project at the Spallation Neutron Source will double the available proton beam power from 1.4 to 2.8 MW by increasing the beam energy from 1.0 to 1.3 GeV and the beam current from 26 to 38 mA. The increase in beam current resulted in the need to redesign the existing normal conducting linac (NCL) RF Systems. High-power testing of the existing…

    Conference Paper

Multipacting in accelerating structures is a complex phenomenon with which there is much to be understood. While multipacting research efforts have primarily been focused on superconducting radio frequency (SRF) systems, normal conducting accelerating structures that have a higher thermal capacity and a greater vacuum pressure tolerance could benefit from additional invest…

    Conference Paper

The high-power klystron amplifiers at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) have been in operation for over 100,000 hours. Overcurrent faults from the klystron cathodes comprise the bulk of RF System downtime. Reliable operation is of particular interest to the SNS, and data from over a decade of operation is used to help mitigate repetitive overcurrent conditions.

    Conference Paper

The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) recently took delivery of a third Radiofrequency Quadrupole (RFQ03) that will ultimately be installed on the front-end (FE) of the SNS Linac. The first RFQ (RFQ01) operated in the SNS FE for more than a decade before being replaced with the second RFQ (RFQ02). RFQ01 was relocated to the Beam Test Facility (BTF) where it operated for five…

The H⁻ ion linear accelerator at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory operates with reliability that routinely surpasses 90% during scheduled beam operation. With the ambitious goal of eventually achieving at least 95% availability, several upgrade and improvement projects are ongoing. One such project is the modification of the coaxial coup…
