Additively Manufactured Components for Nuclear Power Applications
The AMMT work package for fiscal year 2026 entitled Component Manufacturing and Demonstrations from AM 316 SS includes three activities that showcases qualities of AM 316 SS that are relevant to the domestic nuclear power sector. The design and fabrication of capsules for INL provide a basis for studying the complexities of interaction of AM 316H SS with salt used in molte…

Additively Manufactured Pressure Limiting Irradiation Capsule for the High Flux Isotope Reactor
The Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies (AMMT) program previously demonstrated an additively manufactured (AM) irradiation capsule (commonly referred to as a “rabbit”) from 316H stainless steel (SS) for insertion into the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)1. This report details efforts to design and fabricate an AM pressu…

Design and Demonstration of an Additively Manufactured Integrated Pressure Limiting Structure for Insertion into a Nuclear Research Reactor
An additively manufactured 316L stainless steel pressure limiting structure (PLS) has been designed as an end cap for an irradiation capsule to be inserted into the high flux isotope reactor (HFIR) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The PLS was printed using a laser powder bed fusion printer and includes a thin cylindrical rupture wall, a shield, and internal supports to fa…

Qualification of an Additively Manufactured Irradiation Capsule for the High Flux Isotope Reactor
As part of the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies (AMMT) Program’s work package Component Manufacturing and Demonstrations from AM 316 SS, irradiation capsules have been additively manufactured (AM) from 316H stainless steel for insertion into the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The irradiation capsules (commonly ref…

Techno-Economic Analysis of Additively Manufactured Brackets Deployed for the US Browns Ferry Nuclear Reactor
During the Transformational Challenge Reactor (TCR) program, multiple nuclear safety-related brackets were made by ORNL researchers at the MDF. These brackets were then provided to Framatome for assembly onto a fuel assembly and later insertion into TVA's Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant (Unit 2). This report analyzes the economics of creating these additively manufactured…
